This is what I get asked more than anything else. Its really not as hard as you may think. Sometimes the hardest part of having your family photographed is convincing some of them that they are important. (wink. wink.)
I totally recommend looking in your closet first. Look for THREE TO SIX colors that go together well. Navy blue (think blue jeans), green, and white. Or black, gray, and plum. Here are some options to mix and match..
GONE are the days of matchy-matchy. Using one color or two colors to be photographed in ONLY work if you are doing a black and white shoot. But hey....its your session so you do what you really like. That's always a win.
Now, you don't have to follow the outfits down to the wire. However, look at the colors. They all FEEL good together, right? Also Don't be afraid to mix and match your clothing options. Don't put everyone in Jeans. Do some jeans, slacks, dress, skirts, and such. Just remember your jeans is the blue color and build your outfits from there.
Another good rule is no flip flops! No wild and colorful busy prints and stay away from shirts that have writing on them. This all takes away from the LOOK of your photograph. Keep clean looking lines in your clothes. TO SUMMARIZE: TRY TO USE SOLID COLORS AND TEXTURES!
These are color combos in sets of three. Pretty cool right?
Some you would have NEVER thought to piece together and YET they look FABULOUS!! You will see which colors are HOT in the stores too. Build from the colors you see when you shop OR check out your own wardrobe at home! I bet you have the look already established...just not put together!!
Lastly, don't skimp out on accessories. Scarves, bracelets, necklaces, hats, etc!!
Use three colors with blue jeans to make a four color combo. (Black, white, gray, blue) There are even skirts, scarves, and hair bows to make it more interesting. Nobody really should be matchy-matchy but the flow of the image looks great!
Here is another example: They kept if very simple. Using a three color combo. Brown, white, and blue jeans. It looks amazing though yes? The little pops of color in Lisa's bracelt and her daughter's headband are a nice touch but not so bright that they take away the focus from their faces.
CHEATER: Classic black always looks fantastic. It also looks amazing when you take it to black and white too if you like something more simple and timeless.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
I usually start off with the family as a whole. I love to add in couples images, single images of each kiddo, some pics of each parent with the kids, and lots of other random shots. It goes by fast but its a LOT of fun!
Any questions, don't hesitate to contact me also. I have had clients text me images of their wardrobe. Honestly, its not as hard as you think it might be. See what you have in your closets first!!
